Preparing Globally Competitive Students

Students must be enrolled in grades 10–12 or be a post-graduate within one year of high school graduation to attend NTC programs. Some programs have age requirements due to testing or internship restrictions.

Yes! Each program offers at least one industry-recognized, high-demand certification or license opportunity. Candidates must meet the age, grade level, and coursework requirements to be eligible for certification testing.

Students can earn up to three high school credits per school year by successfully completing their NTC program.

CTSO stands for Career and Technical Student Organization. CTSO programs are national student organizations that help students develop leadership, teamwork, and career skills related to their technical field of study. At Norfolk Technical Center (NTC), CTSOs are an important part of each program. They give students opportunities to: • Compete in state and national competitions • Participate in community service and leadership activities • Network with industry professionals and other students • Build resumes and career portfolios Some examples of CTSOs offered at NTC include: • SkillsUSA • HOSA – Future Health Professionals • FBLA – Future Business Leaders of America • FCCLA – Family, Career and Community Leaders of America Each NTC program includes participation in a CTSO related to its career pathway.

The best programs for post-graduate applicants are: • JAVA Programming & Gaming • Pharmacy Technician • Clinical Medical Assistant Starting in the 2025–2026 school year, Criminal Justice and Fashion Design will be offered as one-year programs. Post-graduate students may also complete the second year of any two-year program if they are eligible.

In this scenario, students who start a two-year program as a post-graduate will have the option to return to NTC to complete year two. However, the student will have 'ADULT' status and will be responsible for full NPS tuition.

Post-grads pay a $100 registration fee. Tuition is waived. Students who have a continuing IEP after high school graduation (non-standard diplomas) are exempt from the registration fee. All post-grads attend during the high school 4x4 block schedule. All NTC programs are full-year.

• Yes, transportation is provided for students who attend one of the five Norfolk Public Schools (NPS) high schools, from their home school to NTC. • Adult students must provide their own transportation.

Evening and apprenticeship programs are offered through the NTC Adult Education Division, which is a separate program. Dual enrollment allows high school students to take college-level courses and earn college credit before graduating. It’s a “double win” — many dual enrollment (DE) courses also count toward high school graduation requirements. These opportunities help students prepare for the transition to a two- or four-year college, the military, technical training, entrepreneurship, or entering the workforce after graduation. Many DE courses are transferable to public colleges and universities within Virginia.
